Navarakizhi: The Rejuvenating Rice Bolus Treatment
Immerse Yourself in Deep Nourishment and Muscular Rejuvenation
Navarakizhi, also known as Shastika Shali Pinda Sweda, is one of Ayurveda’s most celebrated and luxurious rejuvenation therapies. This treatment involves a full-body fomentation using small boluses (Kizhi) filled with a special medicinal rice, cooked in a nourishing decoction of milk and healing herbs. The rhythmic application of these warm, fragrant boluses deeply nourishes the muscle tissues, relieves pain, and revitalizes the entire nervous system, offering a profound sense of wellness and strength.
The Navarakizhi Experience: A Symphony of Warmth and Nourishment
During your treatment, you will be guided through a series of comfortable positions. Specially cultivated Shastika rice—renowned for its nutritive properties—is cooked in a pot of milk and a decoction of Bala root, a powerful rejuvenating herb. This warm, cooked rice is then tied into soft linen boluses. Our trained therapists will rhythmically massage your entire body with these warm boluses, which are continuously replaced to maintain a constant, soothing temperature. The experience concludes as the herbal-infused rice paste is gently scraped from the skin, leaving you feeling deeply relaxed and replenished.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ`s)
How is Navarakizhi different from other bolus treatments (like Pinda Sweda)?
The key difference is the medium. While other therapies may use dry herbs or sand, Navarakizhi specifically uses Shastika rice cooked in milk and Bala decoction. This unique combination is exceptionally nourishing (Brimhana), making it the treatment of choice for debility, muscle wasting, and Vata imbalance, whereas other bolus treatments are often more focused on reducing inflammation (Shamana).
Is this treatment suitable for someone with high Pitta (heat sensitivity)?
Yes, but with careful management. The temperature of the boluses is meticulously controlled to be warm and soothing, not hot and aggravating. Furthermore, the cooling and nourishing properties of the milk and Bala herb can help pacify Pitta. A consultation with our doctor is essential to customize the therapy for your constitution.
What does the treatment feel like?
The sensation is one of deeply penetrating, moist warmth. The rhythmic tapping and massage with the soft, warm boluses is incredibly soothing and is often described as lulling the nervous system into a state of deep peace. Most clients find it so relaxing that they drift into a peaceful sleep.
I am diabetic. Can I undergo this treatment?
Yes, Navarakizhi can be very beneficial. It is a external treatment and the rice is not consumed. The therapy can help improve peripheral circulation, which is often a concern in diabetes, and aid in managing neuropathic pain. As with any treatment, a full disclosure of your health history during consultation is necessary.
How should I prepare for the session?
It is best to arrive on an empty stomach or after a very light meal. We recommend hydrating well before and after your treatment. You will be provided with all necessary attire and guidance to ensure you are completely comfortable.
Why is a series of treatments recommended?
Navarakizhi works on a deep tissue level. A single session is deeply relaxing, but the true rejuvenating and strengthening effects are cumulative. A series of treatments (typically 7-14 days) allows the body to fully absorb the nourishment, repair tissues, and reset the nervous system for lasting results.
